It was about 8 pm on a Wednesday and although we were promised a rainless afternoon, it hadn't stopped raining! James and me were relaxing talking about the football rankings, ready for the sixth fuel drain for the day to arrive. Before long we had the phone call from a lovely woman on a company expedition who had arrived at the BP petrol garage in Spitalfields and put petrol in a diesel well worn Porsche Carrera GT hire car in error. The poor thing was pretty irritated it seemed, saying "I can not believe I have ruined the vehicle! I am so used to putting petrol in my petrol car I had forgot I was driving a diesel!" We told her to take it easy and not to fret, and that such things unfortunately often happen. She managed to maneuver the vehicle to a protected position and, seeing as it was just a short distance off from our van, we were able to get to her without delay. The bad fuel was drained so she could once again go back to the motel she was staying in. Despite the fact we got very wet, it was all worth the time to watch her drive home contented and less apprehensive. Yet another job in Tower Hamlets done well in my opinion!

The 3 things you SHOULD know about a Misfuel!

AdBlue In Diesel

In Tower Hamlets we have discovered progressively more occurrences of AdBlue contamination where someone has put AdBlue right into their diesel fuel tank. This is partly caused by motorists not knowing the way to use it (please note: it's not a fuel additive), and partially because the inlets for diesel and AdBlue are generally right next to each other on the vehicle.

Now, precisely what is the trouble with putting AdBlue in a diesel car?

Seeing that the product is primarily deionised water, it is just like pouring water in your tank. Diesel and water will not mix in the least and trying to run a diesel car on water cannot work. Additionally, the urea is particularly corrosive to the fuel system lines and seals and is prone to crystalising, damaging injectors and filters. In the event that you put AdBlue into a fuel tank get it drained right away. And certainly never turn over the motor - not even to move it from the pump. If perhaps you have started the vehicle you will most likely have to have the complete fuel system cleaned and filters changed.

Give us a call if you are struggling with AdBlue contamination. We will help you. We are Contaminated Fuel Specialists and will be able to correct every type of AdBlue liquid contamination.

Waste Fuel Removal

Got an old fuel container at the rear of the garden containing out of date, useless or degraded fuel? We can assist you to dispose of it. We have been called out to many privately owned and industrial premises in Tower Hamlets to deal with taking away and disposing of fuel storages. We are registered by the Environment Agency to be able to remove and recycle waste fuel legally and safely.

No matter if the fuel storage is an underground container, a mobile bowser, or even several drums in an outbuilding, assuming that we are able to access it, we can empty it for you.

We not long ago received a call about a driver who had put the incorrect fuel in his blue Toyota Highlander Hybrid in Spitalfields. He had ground to a halt on the street. A young lady from Spitalfields with her little ones in her diesel friend's Hyundai Accent had put £30 of petrol at the Sainsburys station. She phoned us weeping and really distraught as she had never wrong fueled previously and did not know what would happen to her vehicle because of it. We assured her that everything should be okay and that she would be ready to go in no time at all. When we arrived on scene she was still upset but as our fuel drainer got to work on the fuel drain she calmed down because she noticed that something could be done and her vehicle wasn't wrecked. She soon enough brightened up and was on her way saying, "I can't believe my bad luck putting the wrong fuel in my car! Specifically with the kids in the back."

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
